If you’re really worried about a particular item or two, you can get packing peanuts for maximum protection. Just be sure to keep them out of reach of toddlers.

• Purge! We are all guilty of saving things we never use. How many times have you opened a box to find an item you purchased years ago that only got used once or twice? This is the chance to save yourself some time and money by getting rid of these items. A common rule of thumb is to get rid of it if you haven’t used it in a year. Additionally, things like VHS tapes, electronic cords and cables, outdated computers, and old books are prime candidates for disposal. If they don’t have a sentimental purpose, get rid of them. A garage sale is a great place to start and will also help fund your move!

• Pack in order. What does this mean? It means taking those items that you seldom use and packing them first. Clothes that are currently out of season, specialty kitchenware, holiday decorations and supplies. All these things should be packed up first and sealed up tight, as you may not be opening them for a while. Those things that you use on a regular basis should remain unpacked right up until you leave. Nothing is worse than nicely packing a box only to have to tear it open a day later because you packed up your blow dryer.

• Consider hiring professionals.
