Checklist for Moving| Your Handy Guide

If you’re preparing to make a local or long distance, residential, commercial, or auto move, then you’ve come to the right place. Moves big and small will benefit from the information you’re about to see. This blog provides a handy checklist for moving any type of property, as it provides reminders for all of the general things that must be taken care of. The checklist comes from industry experts, who hope to create more informed consumers and revamp the perspective of the industry. If you’re taking the do-it-yourself approach, make sure that you pay close attention to this checklist, and always give yourself ample time to take care of everything (we recommend starting preparations and planning two to three months in advance).

Checklist for Moving| Your Handy Guide

This is a straight-forward list of things that you will need to take care of–

  • Gather multiple moving quotes. You want to get quotes from as many companies as possible, so that you can get the best price and services for your move. Start about two months before your intended moving day.

  • Research any potential companies and verify that they are fully licensed, insured, and reputable (consult the California Public Utilities Commission as they have that info). Continue this process until you’ve found the perfect company.

  • Gather materials for the move. You will need tape, boxes, packing paper or bubble wrap, moving blankets, and shrink wrap. You can also purchase special moving crates and additional packing materials if needed (get them yourself, or pay the movers, it’s up to you). You want to do this about a month and half before moving day so that you have lots of time to pack.

  • Plan meals so that the fridge will be empty on moving day. Start organizing your fridge and freezer and create a plan, so that you can consume the food before moving day arrives. Start this process at least a month before moving day (or earlier if you have enough food to live through a nuclear winter).

  • Transfer or shut off all utilities, notify organizations of change of address. This is a big one, as it’s good to have your utilities transferred to the new address before you arrive, and you also don’t want to pay for utilities at the old place once you’re gone. You also want to have all mail forwarded to the new address, and to notify schools, banks, etc. that you will be moving to a new location. We recommend taking care of this at least two weeks before your moving day.

  • Choose a moving company that offers the services you need at a price that fits your budget. You want to make certain that your movers can provide moving solutions for all of your moving needs, so do not make a hasty decision when choosing a mover. Pick a company at least a month before your intended moving date, so that you can choose the date and time that you need.

  • Donate or discard all items that will not be making the move with you. Find a local church or charity and donate gently used household or office goods. These organizations will happily put these items to good use. You can also have a garage sale and make a little bit of money off of those items, or just throw them away. Do whatever tickles your fancy, and take care of it at about two weeks before the move occurs.

  • Create a personal inventory of all items that you will be moving. The moving company will create an inventory based on the furniture and boxes that you have (or if they’re handling the packing), but you should make your own so that you have something to verify their information. If you have items that are wired and must be disconnected, take a picture before disconnecting the wires so that you know exactly how they’re configured. You want to start packing about two weeks before your moving date, so that’s a good time to create an inventory.

  • Prepare a tip, snack, or treat for your movers. This isn’t required, but a gesture like this goes a long way towards ensuring that you get great service throughout the move. Take care of people, and they will take care of you.
